Brandon Gimbel, MD

About the Author

Brandon Gimbel, M.D., is a psychiatrist and writer whose work focuses on presence, restraint, and the conditions that allow people to remain connected without force.

He is the author of Staying in the Work and Just Right Here, and the editor of The Hard Work of Healing , a collection of essays by therapists, clergy, and mindfulness teachers on what healing looks like in practice.

Dr. Gimbel is the founder of North Star Behavioral Health , a psychiatry group practice in the Chicago area. His clinical work has informed his writing, but his books are not manuals or how-to guides. They reflect an interest in what happens when people stay—through discomfort, distance, and uncertainty—long enough for something real to emerge.

He earned his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University and completed his psychiatry residency at the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program, where he served as Chief Resident. He previously held faculty and clinical appointments at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

He currently serves on the clinical faculty at Rush University, where he supervises and teaches psychiatry residents.

Dr. Gimbel lives and works in Illinois.
